pictureThe YWCA welcomes Linda Armstrong Kelly as the keynote speaker at the ''Empowering Women With Tools to Dream'' luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Sept. 29.

Kelly is best-known as the mother of Texas-born seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.

Her 2005 book, ''No Mountain High Enough (Raising Lance, Raising Me),'' focuses on her early life as a teenage mother, living in poverty and trying to do the right thing while raising an unstoppable 10-pound baby boy.

Lance Armstrong credits his mother as the unsung hero who helped him achieve his spectacular cycling victories - and his triumph over cancer. He also calls his mother his role model.

The event at the Abilene Civic Center, 1100 N. 6th St., is by reservation only.

The YWCA is accepting sponsorships and table reservations. More information is available by calling 677-5321.

Funds raised through the luncheon benefit the YWCA and its programs, YW-CAre, Y-Teens and Breast Cancer Awareness.

It was awesome to watch The Tour on OLN for the past 22 days. It is amazing that even non-cycling enthusiasts know his name, even if they don't realize how historic this year was for the cycling event, itself. This is definitely going to be a factoid added to the modern Trivial Pursuit games!!!
