Rita, the ninth hurricane and 17th named storm of the June 1-Nov. 30 Atlantic hurricane season, was about 755 miles (1,215 kilometers) east-southeast of Corpus Christi, on the Gulf Coast. This is the first time in 10 years that Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes, named in alphabetical order, have reached the letter ``R.''

Galveston, Texas, smashed in 1900 by the deadliest hurricane ( that killed up to 12,000 people ) in U.S. history, is in the center of the storm's projected path.

Are they evacuating the Houston/Galveston area now? I haven't heard much re: this storm here in Cali...my mom on the East coast keeps relaying me messages via telephone.

Hope your other house remains safe and intact.

I was working in Goliad earlier this week, but the Court House is now closed and folks are moving inland. I suspect it'll get pretty windy here in San Antonio, but my real concern is with the folks closer to the coast.

Had no idea you guys have a place in Brooks Co. I did some work down there last year. Their Court House is nifty because they keep all their records in the basement, feels like you're somewhere you're not supposed to be. Oh, and the Best Western in Falfurrias was new and clean. A real treat after some of the dives I've had to stay in elsewhere in south Texas.
