Halloween / Fall Festival Season has BEGUN

Last week, we went to a couple of events to usher in the season, and the festivities that go along with it...

First off, we went to the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, where they were having a "Pillage the Village" event, and were inviting kids to dress up for Trick or Treatin', games and fun.

This year, he had asked to be Mario, among other things - I'm still working on a couple of other costumes; hopefully they'll turn out okay - and was really excited to put the outfit on.

The hubs and I thought that the museum was quite fascinating, but the little boy was clearly restless to get down to the REAL business. :)

and even get some Old-Timey-Playground time in.

After that, we went on the Hamby where they were having a Trick or Treat/ Fall Festival/ Flea Market thingy going on as well.  They advertised that they welcomed all the kids to come in costume, and so Jaxon was already dressed for the occasion. :)

The little boy was thrilled that there were more games and trick-or-treating.

Musical Theater 2015

After church today, we surprised the little boy with the matinee performance of Mary Poppins at the Civic Center, put on as part of the ACU Homecoming celebrations.

We had just watched the movie a couple of weeks before, and he was super excited at his first theater/live performance experience. Yes, that wide eyed expression is his "I'm Bursting With Excitement" face.

Plus, he knew the songs, and could say "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" flawlessly :)

After about 10 minutes, we moved to some empty seats up at the front ( 2nd row! ) where we had a spectacular view of the stage and performers, and the little boy was very intrigued by the musicians/orchestra hidden down below the stage, where the audience couldn't see.

All in all, he was very good for the 3+ hours that the show went on for - even I was getting a little restless - and a good time was had by all.

ACU Homecoming Fireworks ( and FIRE )

Last year, Madge invited us over to watch the ACU Homecoming fireworks from her driveway, which faced the field from which the fireworks were set off.

This year, Madge was feeling very bad with vertigo, and didn't host a get-together, but told us we were more than welcome to park at her home and watch the fireworks show.  How could we say no to that? :)

We get there just in time, put out our folding chairs, and enjoy the show.

The little boy thought that the booms were too loud.. I don't blame him.  We were just about across the street ( and just a tad more ) from the field where the apparatus was set up.

Halfway through the show, we noticed that the field was on fire.

Then, came the sounds of sirens as the firetrucks rushed to the scene.  Meanwhile, the fireworks show was still going on!

The little boy was dancing along to the finale, which is always spectacular, when we noticed a second fire a little further away.

AFTER the finale, there was some more explosions/fireworks going off ON THE GROUND!

I later found out that the fire had made its way to a trailer holding some fireworks and set THOSE off. Winds then carried the embers across the street and started ANOTHER fire.

Too Close to Home

Literally.

 photo 2_zpsfawilb1n.jpg

Last night there was a fire, a mere 0.4 mile away.

It was about midnight, and I was still doing a bit of work on the computer when I heard a siren blasting across the front of our property.  I step outside a few minutes later, and there is the smell of smoke in the the air.

The hubs and I walk to the back of the property, and look towards where the wind is blowing from, and we see smoke.  And then, an 18-wheeler type fire vehicle drives past our front towards the fire, and we're freaking out a little bit more.

With the drought and things being so dry, and us living out here in the country with very flamable stuff all around us, the hubs decides to take a short drive down to see what the situation was.

He came back a few minutes later and said that he had spoken to a Deputy who happened to live next door to the house that caught fire, and he had called the emergency in, and that it would appear that the fire department had it under control.

This morning, we find out that the house was unoccupied at the time, and I am thankful for that.

But I can do without any more fire drama.

Please.
