Preserving Our Heritage

Walter is my father in law.

walter woods

He is also a story teller....

To date, he has written about over 400 stories about his life and the people he knew/knows. About 110 of those stories are set to be made into a book ( Volume 1 of about 4 volumes ), and hopefully that will be out some time soon, after all the final proof reading etc. etc.

He tells these stories all the time at different places and occasions, and is often invited by different groups in and around Abilene to share these insights into his life, and they are usually humorous and often times, contain lessons that we could all benefit from.

Being a member of the Tejas ( yeah, that's right, TeJas ) Story Telling Society, it was only fitting that when the StoryCorps Mobile Booth came around to Abilene, he would be one of those who would be recording their stories/memories with them.... which was what he did on Sunday before Church, and now David is in the process of getting the siblings and family copies of that CD.

storycorps

StoryCorps is basically one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, getting Americans of all races and heritage to share their life stories, and celebrating the American people as well as culture.

A copy of that CD will be archived for posterity in the Library of Congress, and portions of different people's interviews will be aired on NPR ( National Public Radio ), which David and I listen to all the time. ( Did I mention I love PBS also?? )

Last but not least, here's a short video clip I made of Walter telling one of his stories, back in 2006. For some er.. unknown reason, my laugh sounds real goofy on here, but try and focus on the story, won'tcha!? :)

Another Trip to Dallas

We made another trip to Dallas today

and I had to wake up at like 5:15 a-freaking-m to get the dogs out to pee and poop ( TMI?! ) and pack us some sandwiches/breakfast/drinks etc etc, get the back seat cleared up ... coz David had a doctor's appointment at 10:15 am and it takes us 3 hours to get there, and the receptionist had called up a day earlier to tell us that we needed to be there at 9:45 am at the very latest ( like, &^%$! ),

So, anyway, it was like any other trip to the doctor we've made, but here are some kinda "interesting" stuff we saw...

Hey it's Day Break!

Elvis is ON TOP of the building!

A ( kinda ) Tricked out Ride

Er, am I don't get the diff.

"Jesus said unto her
I am the resurrection, and the life;
he that believeth in me,though he were dead,
yet shall he live;
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me
shall never die.
Believest thou this?"

Laggard..

Has it been a week already since I posted?

Well, it's been an on and off stressful week, with all kinds of things running around in my brain. *sigh*. But what the hey, la di da, life goes on.

On Tuesday, Cindy brought her grandchildren Allen and Anastasia to our house as they were here to visit for a week. Allen is 5 and Anastasia just turned 4. They were supposed to be given a little "presentation" about Malaysia, but they were more interested in petting the little kitties through the cat door in my room window. :) If I had had more presence of mind, I would have grabbed my camera and started taking pictures of THAT. Oh well.

Meanwhile, here's a sweet online application/ music player that I have been playing around with, called MixWit, and here's a mixed tape of "Zen"nish music ( aka music to fall asleep to, I'm sure.. )that I did, amongst others.

Too Close for Comfort

There were several grass fires in our area yesterday

grassfire

and one of them was merely 4 miles away, as the crow flies. The situation was made even scarier because we had gusting winds blowing our way, and very dry conditions. Also, we live out in the country , where there is a whole bunch of dry brush, coming very close up to the house.

David and I drove out to the place close to 10.30 pm, and we could see an area that had some glowing embers!

Long Good Tuesday

Ooo What an eventful Tuesday

Firstly, we woke up early to get ready to go to Lubbock, which is 3 hours away, for an appointment that had to do with the adjustment of my immigration status.

We got there about an hour and 15 minutes early and the people there were nice enough to let me in early and I had all my stuff done in about 15 minutes.

w00t!

By the time we got home, it was almost time for Taco Tuesday. We couldn't miss dinner with the family, so we trooped on down to Rosa's for dinner with the family, and got everyone caught up on the progress of stuff.

Then we went home for half an hour..

and then we were off to the Willie Nelson concert.. WOOHOO!!

Behold the Second Cattery..

So we finally finished up the second cattery,

and have moved the cats that had been inhabiting my "study" in crates out into the back yard.

The cats had never been outdoors before, and so they went a little crazy out there. Hehehe. Here's Charcoal peeking out of the Pet Taxi that we used to ferry them out there....

Plus they had never seen snow or rain, and that intrigued them no end!

Here's a little video of the kitties in the cattery :

I've also finished cleaning up my study, so now I can sit down and actually STUDY without having cat litter flung at me! The room looks voluminous!

Genesis 7:14

They had with them every wild animal
according to its kind, all livestock according
to their kinds, every creature that
moves along the ground according to its kind
and every bird according to its kind,
everything with wings.

Mini Me

My brother Carter says his 2 year old, Eliza, looks like me

so I used a photo of me when I was about 2 years old, and photoshopped it into a pic to be side by side with her, just to spook him..

Heheheheh. How twisted is that :P

Mangosteens and Tau Sar Pia

One of the places Cindy and I

usually stop by on our Friday Girls' Day Out deals is the Filipino Food Store in Abilene. This week, the ultimate, and I mean, ULTIMATE treasure they had in there were mangosteens. They were pretty pricey, and the box/carton they were in still had the "flown in via JAL" on it! But Ah... food from home...

The ones I bought somehow were missing the pretty petal looking thingies..

Also, a certain someone said that they weren't going near the "embryo" looking insides! HRMPHHH!!!

Another food I get there at times is Tau Sar Pia, a kind of pastry treat with red/green beans or lotus paste filling. Yummmm..

Oooo AND the second cattery is ready, and all the remaining cats have been transfered into it..Will post pictures in the next post once I get them organized :)
